I was nicely surprised with the hostels where I stayed during my two months in China. I have rarely been disappointed, on the contrary, if you are visiting the following cities and you are looking for a good youth hostel don't miss those :

DALI - Jade Emu

Excellent hostel run by an Australian guy. The staff speak excellent English and can give you good advice for your visits. They can also book your bus and train tickets. You can tell that the facilities are new. Excellent Chinese and Western menus. I know this will sound lame but the icing on the cake is that you can access Facebook from your room!

GUILIN - Backstreet Youth Hostel

Very nice youth hostel . The beds in the dorms are large and extremely comfortable – there are like double beds! The staff is friendly and speak excellent English. You can have access to facebook from the common room. They serve food but it's only Western and rather expensive compared to other places so I would recommend that you eat outside!

CHANGSHA - Hunan International Youth Hostel

Very nice hostel with very comfortable beds. Most of the staff speaks English. However they do not serve food but it is not a problem because you can find delicious and extremely cheap street food right at the door.

XIAN - ShuYuan International Youth Hostel

Very well located youth hostel with spacious rooms and comfortable beds . Most of the staff can speak English. Restaurant and bar inside the hostel – but I have not tested.

LIJIANG – Inn Garden

Nice hostel , very well located . I found the staff there very nice and helpful. The receptionists were happy to help me with the visa extension application . They serve meals and can you can book bus and train tickets.

SHAXI - Horsepen 46

Staff in this hostel were very friendly. They organize free guided walks on Saturday. If you go there don't forget to give a hug to their MASSIVE St Bernard for me!

SHANGRI LA - Dragoncloud Guesthouse

This is the only hostel that I wouldn't recommend. The beds are not comfortable at all, the toilets are not very clean and it was quite cold in my room.
