San Juan Chamula

San Juan Chamula is a small indigenous village located in Chiapas few miles away from San Cristobal. It's the visit of the church that has stricken me the most but the use of camera being forbidden there I only have words to give you a slight idea of what this mystical and disturbing place is like. The inside of the church doesn't look like any other church I've been to.

The floor is covered with pine needle and paper lantern lit by the believer. On the side one can see paintings and sculptures of Spanish saints which are adorned with flowers and candles. There are no seats in the church. People who pray are kneeled on the floor drinking coca cola. Apparently originally they were drinking Posh, a very strong liquor that they drank before spiting it to let the bad spirit go. But during the last few years Posh has been replaced with Coca Cola as it makes burp and consequently drag out the Evil quicker. (explanation from my guide)

Suddenly we hear an animal cry but nobody react, this seems to be quite usual for people there. I walk up toward the altar where a religious man is cutting a chicken's throat that a woman from the village brought to him. I don't really understand what is going on, I just want to leave that place.
