Although we used couchsurfing a lot during the first part of the trip we also stayed in a few hostels. So for those are looking for an hostel in one of the places that we visited in Mexico, here is the list of those we tested, ranked in order of preference.
Cancun - Hostel Quetzal £ 10.33 / 12.49 euros per night
Without doubt the best hostel in which we stayed in Mexico. Very expensive for Mexico but not that much for Cancun. Excellent atmosphere with breakfast and dinner served every evening. Free taxi every night to get you to the clubs.
Merida - Hostal Zocalo £ 6.88 / Euro 8.33
Very nice hostel with great breakfast included. Located on the main square. Staff very welcoming. The hostel is run by a couple of young parents so families with children are welcome. Good value for money.
Palenque - Yaxkin Hostel £ 7.36 / 8.92 euros per night
This hostel is located in the vegetation. It's only a short walk from the roundabout from where leave all the collectivos that take you to all the tourist attraction (agua azul, the ruins and waterfalls) Staff very pleasant. Do not forget your mosquito repellent though, after all we're in the jungle!
Playa del Carmen - Che Hostel £ 4.92 / 5.95 euros per night
Very good hostel located just steps away from the beach. Bar upstairs, good atmosphere every night. Breakfast included (eggs, toast, fruit)
Tullum - Mama's Home £ 7.38 / 8.92 euros per night
This hostel probably serves one of the best breakfasts in Mexico! Personal pleasant and located just steps away from the main avenue where you will find taxis to take you to the beach or to the ruins.
San Cristobal - Posada Juvenil £ 4.14 / 5.20 euros per night
Not really attractive but located in downtown. Showers and rooms were not very clean at the time of our stay. The breakfast is not included.
